CYLINDER SEAL - ($25 US)

THREE MAGI - PRESENTATION SCENE

ASHUR 1900 BC

Stone cast cylinder seal, 33 mm (1.25") 20 mm diameter (three quarter inch), with roll-out tablet 80 x 50 mm (approx 3 x 2") & description.

Replica of a distinctive carved ivory Ashur seal from the Old Assyrian period circa 1900 BC.

The seal was produced in the workshops of the famous Ashur Merchants who revived Mesopotamia after the collapse of the 3rd Sumerian Dynasty with their vigourous trading colonies.

With the characteristic Ashur engraving style of hatching and cross-hatching, their mythic depictions were based on popular Ur lll styles, particularly the standardised presentation scene of the Three Magi and the King.

An event central to Mesopotamian myth, the seal portrays the archetypal three court astrologers, the famous "Three Magi," who approach Ea-Enki, Lord and King of all the earth, to warn of changes in the stars which portend disaster.
