CLASSICAL SUMERIAN SEAL TABLET - ($40 US)

FLOOD STORY

2200 BC study replica

Stone-cast terracotta tablet 80 x 40 mm (approx 3 inches), on 90 x 70 mm black mount with wood museum display stand and back label description.

In beautifully executed detail the tablet depicts the enigmatic stellar goddess, Inanna-Ishtar, rising resplendent over the mountains. With outstretched wings to indicate her celestial origin, thunder bolts issue from her shoulders as she symbolically upends a pitcher of water onto the ground to flood the earth. Alongside her, Zu the Storm Demon of wind and pestilence descends like a bird-of-prey.

Opening a huge crack in the ground beneath, Nergal underworld god of earthquake emerges from beneath the ground wielding his saw. Ea-Enki god of the earth ascends from the sea floor bringing the Great Flood with him, as fish and water stream from his shoulders. He is attended by the two-faced minister god Usmu, who counsels on the heavenly cycles.

On the far side of the scene, with rays emanating from head and shoulders and royal Lion of Leo at his feet, the hero sun god Marduk-Shamash stands with weapon raised, defending the earthly Tree of Life which is threatened by the vengeful stellar goddess who dares usurp his place in the heavens and unleash the elemental forces upon the earth.

The name "Adda," the original owner of the seal, is displayed as glyphs in the upper corner, along with the Sumerian word ÒdudsarÓ or scribe.
