SUMERIAN VOTIVE FIGURE - ($25 US)

2200 BC

Bronze figurine, cold cast, 60 x 20 mm (2.5 x 0.75 inches) with parchment description.

Cast replica of 2200 BC Sumerian votive figurine from the 3rd Dynasty of Ur.

Looking remarkably like a modern-day Latvian or Turk, the little figure portrays the classic Sumerian of the day, with shaved head and beard. They present a very different image to their Akkadian-Assyrian counterparts, known for their prominent Semitic noses and thick wavy beards.

In an ongoing tradition from the earliest days of Sumeria, small statuettes like these were given to the priests of the temple so that ordinary people could be represented before the Gods in the inner sanctum of the temple.

Sumerian traditions had their final flower when the 3rd Dynasty of Ur arose around 2200 BC. They ruled much of Mesopotamia until the Elamites destroyed Ur in 2000 BC.
