CANAANITE FERTILITY GODDESS - ($30 US)
THE GREAT MOTHER ASTARTE-ASHERA
13th century BC
Stone-cast plaque-figurine, terracotta hydrostone, 150 mm (6 inches) with description.
Duplicate casting of 1200 BC Canaanite clay fertility figure, known locally in the lands of Israel and Judah as Astarte or Asherah, consort of Baal or Yah-El.
A popular and much revered image throughout the Middle East for countless centuries, the statuette is the Semitic version of the ancient Mesopotamian goddess Inanna-Ishtar in her breast-offering pose known famously as ÒThe Ishtar Pose.Ó
Astarte-Asherah evolved from the heavenly goddess of the old Sumerian legends into the "Queen Of Heaven" and the "Great Virgin Mother," effectively becoming the feminine aspect of the godhead. She commanded universal respect and is remembered in the ancient myths as "she who gave light to the heavens."
Hand made clay effigies similar to this are found throughout the Holy Land and she was venerated in various forms right up to the time of Greece.
