GODDESS ISHTAR -- STAR QUEEN - ($20 US)

1000 BC study replica

Stone cast cylinder seal, black hydrostone, 25 mm (one inch) with terracotta roll-out tablet, 80 x 60 mm (3.25 x 2.2Ó) & parchment description

Replica of an engraved Assyrian seal from 1000 BC.

In a recurring story well known to ancient Mesopotamians, Ishtar Goddess of the Bright Star, advances upon Ea-Enki God of the Earth, who stands before her petting a young deer, symbolic of the Earth's creatures. The vengeful goddess has "upset the balance of things" and a stream of water pours from beneath the earth god's arm. To emphasize the flooding of the earth, upturned urns fill the sky with pouring water.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

1000 BC was a time of tremendous social development when the linear style of early Assyrian seals was replaced by dimensional designs fashioned with cutting wheels and fine drills. Seals from this period characteristically depict ancient mythic themes, portraying arched Babylonian-style figures, winged goddesses and the elegant modeling found on Assyrian reliefs.
